The MBTI instrument is a restricted assessment, meaning it can only be purchased and used by those who meet certain requirements. Program participants who successfully complete an MBTI® Certification Program satisfy these requirements. The MBTI® Certification Program consists of a four-day workshop that explains psychological type theory, gives examples of how type is used by both individuals and organizations, and teaches participants how to deliver feedback for the MBTI® Step I (Form M) and MBTI® Step II (Form Q) instruments. Two organizations in the United States are authorized by the publisher of the MBTI instrument, CPP, Inc., to offer the MBTI® Certification Program: AMERICAN MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION (AMA) CENTER FOR APPLICATIONS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL TYPE (CAPT) Through 2009, Type Resources will also provide a program to certify users on the MBTI instrument. Although Type Resources' offering differs from the new program outlined above, anyone who successfully passes their course will be recognized by CPP as an MBTI® Certified Practitioner.
